At the center of the captivating rolling fields, lived a young shepherd. His existence was essentially untarnished, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was mainly to tend to his herd of sheep.

Their low murmuring and the whispering of the breezes among the lone tree on the peak were his constant associates. Day upon day, watching over his wards inculcated in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.

However, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. During one such occasion from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous scheme.

Stories of wolves prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.

One morning he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.

The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This game continued for a few days more. But, one day, a real wolf did come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he here went back to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the results of crying wolf.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
